As nuclear tensions reach a breaking point, Israel launches strikes on Tehran
Israeli officials referred to the early Friday morning attack on Iran's capital as "preemptive strikes" against the Islamic Republic, with explosions reverberating throughout Tehran.
The attack comes hours after the International Atomic Energy Agency censured Tehran for the first time in 20 years, marking a dramatic uptick in Middle East tensions over Iran's rapidly developing nuclear programme.
Although the precise amount of damage and casualties is still unknown, Iranian state media outlet IRNA reported that repeated explosions could be heard throughout Tehran.
After the strikes, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz proclaimed a state of emergency and warned of impending Iranian reprisals.
Katz said in a statement Friday that "a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran."

Following the IAEA Board of Governors' censure of Iran on Thursday for its failure to cooperate with international inspectors—the first such action in 20 years—the attacks took place against a backdrop of rising nuclear tensions.
In an immediate response to the criticism, Iran announced plans to expand its nuclear capabilities by building a third uranium enrichment facility and replacing its current centrifuges with more sophisticated models.
