Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he held a “warm and constructive” conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, with trade, critical minerals and security dominating the agenda. It was the pair’s fourth call since Trump’s re-election, but no face-to-face meeting has yet been confirmed.
Albanese has faced pressure at home to secure in-person talks after a planned meeting in Canada collapsed earlier this year when Trump abruptly returned to Washington during the Israel–Iran crisis. He is expected to travel to New York later this month for the United Nations General Assembly, though a bilateral with Trump is not scheduled.
The Trump administration is reviewing the AUKUS pact and has imposed tariffs of 10% on most Australian goods, with 50% on steel and aluminum. Albanese has floated access to Australia’s critical minerals as part of potential tariff relief, but no exemptions have been granted. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also pressed Canberra to lift defense spending to 3.5% of GDP.
Australia’s ambassador in Washington, former prime minister Kevin Rudd, described the alliance as “going from strength to strength” after the latest call. But the opposition and Greens say the lack of a meeting and lingering trade disputes show the Trump administration is treating Australia with disregard.
